Review: Ruling It All by D.G. Carothers

Welcome to Bear Essentials, where we strive to make your inner beauty shine bright.

Cover Design: Samantha Santana, Amai Designs

Mel Carter is perfectly content with their life. A chance encounter and a size fifteen foot in their mouth later, content is no longer acceptable.

Elias Garcia slammed into Mel’s life with a carefree giggle. There was only one thing for a Dommy with a penchant for strict rules like Mel to do, assess their life and take the leap, okay two things.

Elias Pov

Before Mel moved to the front of the SUV, he turned toward me as I waited for Darius and Abel to climb the stairs. “May I speak with you for a moment, Elias?”

I had hoped they would ignore me. I nodded and moved closer. I fidgeted with the caddy full of cleaning supplies in my hands. Now that it wasn’t blocked by a bookcase, I could clearly see Mel’s shirt. I quirked a half-smile at the cartoon unicorn with reading glasses on. Above it, it said, “Reading is fundamental.”

Mel crossed their arms, and then I guess, realized it was a defensive posture, then put them down again. They seemed nervous, which made me nervous. They were always so calm and collected. I waited. Mel put a hand on the SUV like they were bracing for their next words. I shifted my weight from one foot to another.

“Listen.” They paused as if their tone sounded as harsh to them as it did to me. Mel put their arm down and straightened their shirt. They took a breath and looked at me. My eyes stopped following their hands, and I tilted my head. I made eye contact briefly and then looked to the side. “My behavior at the BBQ was unacceptable. I apologize for my words. I had no right to treat you like that.”

“Okay.”

“Okay?” Mel seemed irritated again.

I went to my internal filing cabinet and pulled out the list of appropriate things to say in this kind of situation. “I accept your apology.” I made an effort to smile, which I was sure came out awkwardly.

Mel relaxed and I did as well. The tension was thick. Mel nodded. “Okay, well, I better get going.”

I started to turn back toward the staircase.

Join Bear Essentials’ front-end manager as they discover just how special the full-time genius, part-time free spirit, Elias aka Blu, really is.

Ruling It All is an M-NB sweet and fluffy romance with BDSM concepts, an age gap, pets who are “silent” characters, and an AI that will cause more than a little mishap.

Content: There is explicit sexual content between consenting adults. There’s orgasm control, wax play, and more kink exploration. There is a dramatic scene involving EMTs and Police but NOT police violence, just the depiction of an emergency and dealing with emergency services and hospitals may be triggering for some.14

My thoughts

Let’s talk about this cover by Samantha Santana from Amai Designs. I freaking love this cover. I said, “Yes” to reading this book because of the cover. Hot. Sexy. Biteable. Yes, please!

Too freaking cute! I am sooooo crushing on Blu. I want to play with Blu too (chuckle). No matter how I reword that it still won’t sound completely “right” because I am a little bit left (wink). D.G. Carothers gives us a strong main character who is neurodiverse and makes the effort every day to surpass the “goals” others have set forth for people on the spectrum. Blu is fun-loving, smart, gorgeous, and I just want to hug (with permission of course). I’m just in love with Blu.

I was hesitant about Mel at first because Blu was so wary. The fact that Mel was willing to admit fault and take corrective action is huge in my book. I love the honest communication between Mel and Blu about boundaries, rules, and expectations. Corothers did justice to the BDSM community in writing this story. Kudos.

The scenes were too short for me, but I think it is because I just fell for Blu.

Ruling It All is a staple now in my BDSM reading list. I love the communication, relationship, and of course Blu.

I received a free copy of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
