Review: The Comfort of Distance by Ryburn Dobbs

“If you keep this up, the reaper will have you!” Looking around at his situation, she might be right.

Cover Design: Danna Mathias

Sgt Hank LeGris stares down at the crushed and gaping skull in the dirt. It’s the second time in just a few weeks that human remains have been found in the Black Hills. Citizens are getting restless. Is it a rogue mountain lion, as many people suspect? Or something even more sinister?

Sebastien Grey is a brilliant forensic anthropologist with debilitating social phobia. When he is asked by his estranged brother to come to South Dakota and help identify who, or what is leaving body parts scattered across the county, he discovers much more than the cause of these strange deaths.12

Holy sugar, Ryburn Dobbs kicks it out of the park with their first novel The Comfort of Distance. The cover and title is slightly deceiving because it looks all calm and peaceful. Then you read the first paragraph and you’re sucked in and can’t get out (laugh). You don’t want to get out either because you are afraid you might miss something if you don’t keep reading.

I adore Sebastien Grey. This is probably because we are very similar in that we both suffer from social anxiety. I relate to this character and feel for how he observes the world around him. Now on the other hand, I have a dislike for his brother Hank for basically just being an ignorant asshole. The family dynamic reminds me of how some of my family has treated me and it just makes me want to hug Sebastien.

This imbalance between Sebastien’s personal life and his professional one drives The Comfort of Distance. Grey is phenomenal in his work and I am just as amazed as LeGris’ colleagues. The multiple mysteries are intriguing and rock solid.

Thank goodness that Dobbs says that this is the first book in the “Sebastien Grey” series, because I cannot wait for another round.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
